The seminar will include time for Q&A and will be followed by refreshments and networking. \nSpeaker: Jeong Hun Kim\,\nSeoul National University Hospital and Seoul National University College of Medicine\, Seoul\, Korea\nTopic: “In vivo genome editing for vision”\nPlease register at: milner-special-seminar-october-2023.eventbrite.co.uk\nThis event will be held in person at the Lecture Theatre\, Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre. \nAbstract\nFrom the FDA approval of anti-VEGF aptamer to wet-type age-related macular degeneration (AMD) of choroidal neovascularization\, anti-VEGF aptamer and antibody have been widely used against all kinds of vaso-proliferative retinopathy. Actually\, current therapies directed at controlling vascular abnormalities in vaso-proliferative retinopathy target VEGF and can slow the progression of these diseases. While the general role of VEGF in development has been well described\, the specific function of locally synthesized VEGF in the eye is incompletely understood. Recently\, RNA-guided genome surgery using CRISPR-Cas9 nucleases has shown promise for the treatment of diverse genetic diseases. Yet\, the potential of such nucleases for therapeutic applications in non-genetic diseases including AMD\, diabetic retinopathy (DR) as well as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is largely unexplored. Those vision-threatening retinopathies such as AMD\, DR\, and ROP are leading causes of blindness in adults and children\, which is associated with retinal over-expression of\, rather than mutations in\, the VEGFA gene. \nHerein I would like to provide some my recent experimental results of therapeutic applications such as small peptide\, small molecule as well as nanoparticles beyond anti-VEGF antibody. No registration is necessary and address details can be found below.\n\nSpeaker \nProfessor Soojin Ryu\, Living Systems Institute\, University of Exeter \nTopic \n“A novel zebrafish model to identify molecular signatures of stress-induced maladaptation” \nAbstract \nChronic or severe stress exposure during development is a strong risk factor for developing neuropsychiatric diseases in humans. One proposed mechanism involves the priming of stress-sensitive gene networks through early life exposure to glucocorticoids (GCs)\, which can modify stress responses later in life. However\, the comprehensive understanding of brain-wide molecular alterations induced by GC priming remains limited. We developed and utilized a novel optogenetic zebrafish model to elevate endogenous GC levels during development and identified the transcriptomic changes in the brain across the life course. When developmental GC-exposed fish were exposed to acute stress in adulthood\, they exhibited highly exaggerated endocrinal and transcriptional changes. These changes included gene sets associated with axon development\, neuronal signaling\, and epigenetic modulators. Remarkably\, the altered gene sets were enriched with risk genes associated with human psychiatric disorders. No registration is necessary and address details can be found below.\n\nSpeaker \nSun Kim\, President of Mogam Institute of Biomedical Research and Professor\, Seoul National University\n\nTopic \nExploring chemical\, genetic and disease space with AI technologies\n\nAbstract \nIn this talk\, I will discuss about how AI and deep learning technologies can be used for predicting drug response\, toxicity\, and repositioning. Before getting into details\, I will briefly talk about essential concepts\, such as embedding or representations\, distance and distributions\, that are frequently used for constructing AI models. Then\, in part 2 of my talk\, I will discuss our recent work on how drug repositioning can be inferred from knowledge graphs that consist of drug\, gene\, and disease. Part 3 of my talk will focus on the gene level modeling\, specifically how AI technologies can be used for modeling drug response\, toxicity\, and disease subtypes using transcriptome and multi-omics data. If time permits\, I will discuss our works on analyzing time-series transcriptome data. \nSpeaker Biography \n \nSun Kim is Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering\, Adjunct Professor of Biological Sciences\, and Director of Bioinformatics Institute (2011-2021) at Seoul National University. He is also currently President of Mogam Institute of Biomedical Research and a member of National Academy of Engineering\, Korea. Before joining SNU\, he was Chair of Faculty Division C; Director of Center for Bioinformatics Research\, an Associate Professor in School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington. Prior to joining IU in 2001\, he worked at DuPont Central Research from 1998 to 2001\, and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1997 to 1998. Sun Kim received B.S and M.S and Ph.D in Computer Science from Seoul National University\, KAIST and the University of Iowa\, respectively. \nSun Kim is a recipient of Outstanding Junior Faculty Award at Indiana University 2004\, US NSF CAREER Award in 2003\, and Outstanding Faculty Award in research 2021 in the College of Engineering at Seoul National University. He is actively contributing to the bioinformatics community\, serving on the editorial board for journals including editors for the METHODS journal (2013-present) and\, associate editor-in-chief for ACM/IEEE Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (2019-2021)\, having served on the board of directors for ACM SIG Bioinformatics and for education for the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Bioinformatics. Among many activities in Korea\, he served on the Samsung Future Technology Committee for 2016-2018\, a member of The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) of the Korean Government for 2019-2020\, President of Korea Artificial Intelligence Society (2016-2018) and Vice President of Korea Society of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (2011-present).
